The history of the airport

In 1968 it was decided to give an airport to the city of L’Aquila and a new site of 150 hectares was selected in the district of Preturo, inside the municipality of L’Aquila. The land was assigned to the local Flight Club which took on full management of the structure.

In 1970 it was authorized the establishment of the airport and its management.

Over the years, the Flight Club committed to ensure that the Airport became a national point of reference for General Aviation.

A Flight School was set up and, in a few years, it became one of the best realities of Center Italy.

Due to the favorable climatic conditions, Preturo Airport became a real Gliding Club, which every year received Pilots from all over Europe.

Besides the intense activity of School and Gliding Club, the Flight Club increased the Airport reputation thanks to many Air Shows organized over the years.

During the emergency following the earthquake that hit L’Aquila in 2009, the airport played a key role in rescue operations. In addition, after the decision to move to L’Aquila the G8 summit in 2009, the structure was renewed and adequate.

On 5th June 2013 airport was named to the memory of Giuliana Tamburro, ENAC engineer, died in the earthquake of L’Aquila in 2009, while on 6th September of the same year, after a meeting with ENAC, the then-mayor Massimo Cialente and the council member for the development of airport area Emanuela Iorio announced that starting from 28th September airport would have received commercial flights.

However, the management failed to activate stable lines and on 13th April 2015 ENAC declared the airport closed to commercial flights and revoked the concession to the Company Xpress.

From 28th October 2020, Airport Management was entrusted to Sunrise Aviation.
